So I got moved to two other mills to bring down the scrap.

I succeeded in bringing down the scrap on my new mills. Before me: 25% scrap across four shifts. Me: less than 10% across four shifts.

The weld box on my new worst mill had some bad bearings in it, it's being rebuilt right now, so I'm expecting total scrap on that mill to drop below 5% when the weld box is reinstalled. Everything else has been fixed.

Funny thing is that the guy I replaced got put on my old mills. Scrap over there skyrocketed from 7% to 25% across all shifts overnight.

High scrap follows this guy, low scrap follows me.

Mal takes pride in what he does.

Edit: I mean this sincerely, not a dig.

All the mills have a lead operator who knows the mill and actually cares about keeping it running good. The production charts show how shit works: lead operator works on the mill, produces very little footage, produces reasonable scrap then the following shifts run the mill successfully until it breaks again, repeat.

Right now my old mills don't have a lead operator, rather four deadbeats who dont give a fuck, and if they do they've got no support and get told to shut down to let the lead worry about it.

Also, the company makes some operators (like me) run two mills simultaneously which is just begging for trouble.

Absolutely. Statistically speaking, for every five days of production one full day's worth plus overhead gets thrown away.

Sometimes you can get the mill to run flawlessly but the material won't run because of impurities in the alloy. If we could get a constant supply of quality material from only one source we could do a lot better.
