Free banana trees!

I read an article a month or so ago about a virus that is rapidly killing off the modern strain of bananas. They're desperately trying to come up with a resistant variant to replace it. The whole banana history is pretty interesting. There have been something like a dozen different hybrids that have been sold as your standard banana over the last 50 years or so, but they've all been different from one another in some aspects, and always fall victim to one disease or another and need to be replaced with a new variant.
One day, your local fruit guy will say, "Yes, we have no bananas." And it will be the end..

I had a Jamaican co-worker when I lived in Orlando that invited me to come live with this family one summer. He said "you can sleep under the reefer trees".

was so hot here last summer at my old work that a bromeliad actually flowered and grew a small pineapple.

I'd love to plant some next to the white pines. They should be fine under several feet of snow, shouldn't they?
